معرفی
Lawrence C. Smith is a Full Professor at the University of Montréal's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Veterinary Biomedicine. He holds the Canada Research Chair in Animal Cloning and Embryo Biotechnologies. His research focuses on epigenetic control in embryonic development, mitochondrial DNA inheritance, and stem cell reprogramming. He pioneered nuclear transfer techniques used in cloning, notably contributing to Dolly the sheep's cloning. His work combines fundamental research with applied projects with industry partners like Clonagen and Boviteq.
Education: DVM (UNESP, 1981), MSc Genetics (Edinburgh, 1983), PhD in Mammalian Embryology (Roslin Institute, 1989). Awards include the 1998 Pfizer Excellence Award in Animal Health.
Research affiliations include the Centre de recherche en reproduction et fertilité (CRRF), Réseau Québécois en reproduction (RQR), and the Centre d’expertise et de recherche clinique en santé animale (CERCL). Over 20 students supervised across master's and doctoral programs. Active in grants including NSERC Discovery Grants and strategic research networks.
Key projects: Nuclear-cytoplasmic interactions in embryos (NSERC), bovine haploid embryo research (MITACS), and mitochondrial heteroplasmy studies. Publications emphasize epigenetic regulation, stem cell differentiation, and cloning technologies.
