Laurie E. Cutting is the Patricia and Rodes Hart Chair Professor of Neuroscience at Vanderbilt University, affiliated with the Departments of Special Education, Psychology and Human Development, Radiology, Pediatrics, and Electrical and Computer Engineering within the School of Engineering. She serves as Associate Director of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center, a member of the Vanderbilt Brain Institute, and training faculty for the Neuroscience Ph.D. program. Her research focuses on brain-behavior relations in children, particularly in academic and cognitive development. She has received prestigious awards including the NIH MERIT Award (2018) and the Joe B. Wyatt Distinguished University Professorship (2017-2018).
Educationally, Cutting holds a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Northwestern University (1997). Her work integrates neuroimaging techniques and cognitive science to address learning challenges, with a focus on reading, math, and developmental disorders. She leads NIH-funded projects examining neural underpinnings of cognitive development and academic achievement.
Her research portfolio spans neuroimaging workflows, educational interventions, and policy-related initiatives. Key contributions include studies on white matter connectivity, neuroanatomical correlates of learning disabilities, and leveraging MRI advancements for clinical insights. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges engineering, education, and medicine, reflected in collaborations across Vanderbilt’s institutes and national initiatives.
Awardees include federal grants, MERIT funding, and policy fellowships (AAAS NIH, 2002-2003). She has advised on national education panels, such as the Federal Reading First Advisory Panel (2007-2009), and contributes to advancing neuroeducation through tool development (e.g., pyPheWAS Explorer).
