Dr. Laurence Luu is a Scientia Lecturer at UNSW Sydney and Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). He leads the Bacterial Colonisation Factor Lab, focusing on understanding bacterial pathogens such as Bordetella pertussis (whooping cough) and Chlamydia trachomatis. His work employs multi-omics and molecular biology techniques to study disease mechanisms and vaccine development.
Dr. Luu holds a PhD from UNSW Sydney (2018) and has held academic positions including Postdoctoral Researcher at UNSW (2018-2022) and Chancellor's Research Fellow at UTS (2022-2025). He has received prestigious awards, including the 2023 Jim Pittard Early Career Award and an NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellowship (2025-2030).
His research emphasizes translational outcomes, with publications in high-impact journals like Nature Communications and The Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Key areas include vaccine antigen discovery, microbiome analysis in inflammatory bowel disease, and immune response characterization in infectious diseases.
Dr. Luu teaches microbiology and immunology courses, including co-coordinating the postgraduate subject Infection and Immune Diagnostics. He actively collaborates internationally and serves on review boards for journals like Emerging Microbes and Infections and Journal of Medical Microbiology.
