F. Heath Damron is an Associate Professor and Director of the Vaccine Development Center at the West Virginia University Health Sciences Center. His primary academic appointment is in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology & Cell Biology within the WVU School of Medicine, and he also serves as Director of the MD-PhD Program at WVU Health Sciences Center.
Dr. Damron's research program focuses on vaccine development against bacterial pathogens including Bordetella pertussis (whooping cough) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as well as viral pathogens like SARS-CoV-2. His work spans multiple areas of immunology and microbiology, with emphasis on understanding host-pathogen interactions and developing novel vaccine platforms. His laboratory investigates multiple vaccine approaches including mRNA vaccines, virus-like particle (VLP) vaccines, and whole-cell formulations, with significant contributions to understanding pertussis vaccine efficacy and waning immunity.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on mRNA-based vaccines, monoclonal antibody therapeutics, and innovative animal challenge models. Dr. Damron has published extensively in high-impact journals including NPJ Vaccines, Infection and Immunity, and Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, with a notable increase in output since 2020 reflecting his active research program addressing emerging infectious disease threats.
As Director of the Vaccine Development Center, Dr. Damron leads a multidisciplinary team focused on translating basic research discoveries into clinical applications. His dual leadership roles in both vaccine development and the MD-PhD Program highlight his commitment to advancing scientific discovery while training the next generation of physician-scientists at WVU.
