Lauren Woolsey is an Associate Professor and Open Educational Resources (OER) Coordinator at Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC). She holds a Ph.D. and A.M. in Astronomy and Astrophysics from Harvard University (2016 and 2013, respectively) and dual B.S. degrees in Astronomy and Physics with High Honors from the University of Maryland, College Park (2011). Her research focuses on solar magnetic fields and their influence on the solar wind, complemented by a passion for astronomy education and accessible science communication.
Since 2016, she has taught introductory astronomy and physics courses at GRCC, transitioning from a research-focused academic path to prioritize teaching. In 2019, she became OER Coordinator, advocating for free/low-cost educational materials and tracking their adoption across disciplines. She earned tenure in 2020 and was promoted to Associate Professor in April 2024. In 2023, she received a sabbatical to update astronomy lab manuals and OER resources.
Outside academia, Woolsey designs educational tabletop games (e.g., Amino, Stars, Inc.) under the brand CGS Unit, co-hosted the Playability podcast on gaming accessibility, and judges game design competitions. Her work bridges STEM education, accessibility, and creative design.
