Professor Lauren Sherar is the Acting Dean of the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University, where she also holds a Professorship in Physical Activity and Public Health. She earned a combined honours degree in Sport Science and Biology from Nottingham Trent University (2001), followed by a Master’s (2004) and PhD (2008) in Physical Activity and Health from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. Her career includes roles as a Research Fellow at the University of Bath and Assistant Professor at the University of Saskatchewan before joining Loughborough in 2012.
Her research focuses on physical activity promotion, sedentary behavior reduction, and their impacts on public health, with particular emphasis on children, adolescents, and marginalized populations. Key areas include:
- Developmental impacts of physical activity and sedentary time in youth
- Epidemiological studies assessing movement behaviors and cardiometabolic health
- Intervention design for hypertension control in rural communities
- Policy evaluation of school-based initiatives like School Streets
She leads the ProPASS Consortium, pooling data to understand movement behaviors and health outcomes. Her work integrates clinical, environmental, and social factors to address global health challenges. Current leadership as Acting Dean involves strategic direction for sport and health sciences education and research.
Notable contributions include co-developing the Creating Active Schools Framework and evaluating the Active Link Sports Programme for excluded youth. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges academic research with policy implementation, emphasizing equity in health promotion.
