Dr. Dale Esliger is an Associate Professor and Reader in Digital Health Research at Loughborough University's School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences, affiliated with the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine. He holds a PhD in Measurement of Physical Activity (University of Saskatchewan) and prior degrees from the University of New Brunswick. His work focuses on digital health technologies, physical activity measurement using accelerometry, and interventions targeting chronic diseases like COPD and diabetes. He has pioneered public health initiatives such as the Snacktivity™ program, emphasizing small behavioral changes through wearable devices and mobile health apps.
Key research interests include wearable sensor validation, cardiometabolic health markers, and contextualized interventions for sedentary behavior reduction. He has led trials like the SMArT Work (Stand More at Work) workplace intervention and COPD-SEAT (Sitting and Exacerbations Trial), demonstrating expertise in translational research and clinical trial design. His work integrates behavioral science with technological innovation, addressing global health challenges in both clinical and community settings.
Publications highlight interdisciplinary collaboration, with a focus on cross-cultural studies (e.g., South African hypertension projects), algorithm development for movement behavior analysis, and cost-benefit evaluations of health interventions. His research bridges gaps between objective measurement (via accelerometry) and population health outcomes, emphasizing real-world applicability.
