Dr. Lauren Fortington is a Senior Research Fellow in injury epidemiology and sports medicine at Edith Cowan University's School of Medical and Health Sciences. Her work focuses on understanding and preventing injuries across various sports and physical activities to promote safer participation for Australians.
Dr. Fortington holds a Doctor of Medical Sciences from the Netherlands (2013). Her academic journey has led her to become a respected researcher in sports injury prevention and epidemiology.
Dr. Fortington's research centers on injury epidemiology and prevention across multiple domains including sports, workplace, and community activities. Her work aims to support active Australians to participate safely in sport, work, and everyday activity. She investigates how a better understanding of injuries and their prevention can keep participants active in sports, older people independent in their homes and community, and workers performing their jobs - ultimately reducing adverse events and healthcare needs.
Her research spans several key areas including sports safety, injury surveillance systems, and the prevention of serious injuries and fatalities in community sports. She has particular expertise in combat sports, rugby, and military personnel injuries, with a focus on spinal cord injuries, concussion, and sudden cardiac arrest.
Dr. Fortington's extensive publication record demonstrates a clear focus on practical applications of injury prevention research. Her recent work shows growing interest in combat sports safety, particularly regarding weight management practices, hydration, and disordered eating. She also maintains strong research programs in rugby injury prevention and military personnel health. Her work increasingly incorporates mental health considerations, as seen in her evaluation of the HEAL™ing Mental Health program for people with mental health disorders in rural Australia.
Dr. Fortington holds significant editorial positions including Associate Editor for Injury Prevention and the British Journal of Sports Medicine. She serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Science and Medicine in Football and Sports Medicine Executive Committee (Treasurer) for the Australasian Injury Prevention Network. She is also a Member of the National Safety Committee for Rugby Australia.
Dr. Fortington supervises PhD students in injury prevention, injury surveillance, and sports safety. Her research is generously funded by prestigious organizations including the International Olympic Committee, Rugby Australia, Injury Matters, Combat Sport WA and Defence Science WA. She leads multiple research projects focused on understanding and addressing illness, injury, and weight-cutting in combat sports, improving injury surveillance for Rugby Australia, and enhancing injury and illness data collection infrastructure.
