Laurel Jean Fredrickson is an Associate Professor in Art History at Southern Illinois University, with expertise in modern and contemporary art with global emphasis. Her interdisciplinary research explores cross-cultural intersections of experimental art and political dissent from the 1960s to the present. She holds a Ph.D. from Duke University (2007) and has published extensively on avant-garde movements and postcolonial art.
Her notable works include Jean-Jacques Lebel and French Happenings of the 1960s: The Erotics of Revolution (2021), analyzing anticolonial art and politics, and ongoing projects on transnational women artists and French colonialism. Her research bridges historical and postwar avant-gardes while addressing themes of identity, displacement, and political trauma.
Recent publications focus on the Venice Biennale's gender politics, Robert Filliou's Fluxus connections, and decolonial practices in Zineb Sedira’s work. Fredrickson’s scholarship emphasizes transnational networks and the socio-political dimensions of art.
