Dr. Jean M. Ippolito is a Professor of Art at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo. She specializes in digital media art, focusing on Japanese and Chinese avant-garde movements, cultural hybridity, and the intersection of traditional aesthetics with contemporary technology. Her research bridges art, technology, and cultural studies, with notable contributions to understanding how digital media reinterprets historical artistic practices.
- Education: Ph.D. in Computer Graphic Art Analysis (The Ohio State University, 1994), M.A. in Art History (University of Washington, 1985).
Her work explores themes such as time-space abstraction in Chinese art, the role of Chinese characters in visual communication, and Japanese contributions to digital art’s global evolution. She has published extensively on topics like cultural preservation through digital media and the fusion of traditional and modern art forms.
Teaching includes courses like ART 101 Intro to Visual Arts, ART 175 Survey of World Art I, and ART 392 New Media Art Seminar. She authored books such as The Search for New Media: Late 20th Century Art and Technology in Japan (2012) and curated exhibitions like Watanabe Kazan: An Artist and Political Hero (2000).
