Simon Anderson is an Associate Professor in Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), serving since 1992. He holds a BA from Sunderland University (1976), and an MA and PhD from the Royal College of Art, London (1988), focusing on Fluxus research from the Tate Gallery Archive. His work spans teaching, curating, and writing on avant-garde movements like Fluxus, Mail-art, the Situationist International, and conceptual photography. He has organized exhibitions, published critiques, and lectured globally on experimental art of the 1960s–80s, emphasizing performance-based practices.
Anderson’s teaching includes courses on art theory, aesthetics, and experimental art forms such as Artists' Books & Related Phenomena and Happening, Events, Theatre of Chance. He advises thesis projects, including Morgan Turner’s 2023 work on spatial poetry and Quinn Veasman’s 2021 project on Ralston Farina’s art.
His professional activities include gallery curation, private art consulting, and interdisciplinary collaborations. He remains active in performance-based research, aligning with Fluxus principles.
