Laura Tokell is an Academic Tutor in Initial Teacher Training (ITT) at the University of Sunderland, affiliated with the Faculty of Education and Society. She teaches on the Masters in Education, Masters in Special Educational Needs, Disability and Inclusion, and ITT courses. Her academic career began with a BA (Hons) in Primary Education and a Master's in Education, both from the University of Sunderland, where her thesis focused on EDI in education with a gender diversity lens.
Her research interests include Gender and Diversity, LGBTQI+ representation in schools, SEND, SEMH, and the pastoral care of children. She actively contributes to staff networks like All Identities Included (LGBTQI+ support) and chairs the Enabled Body and Mind Network (disability/mental health advocacy). Laura emphasizes student voice, particularly in primary education, and advocates for inclusive pedagogies through training and resource development.
Her professional background includes overseas work in Europe, influencing her EDI focus, and prior roles as an adult tutor developing vocational courses for disadvantaged groups. She supervises thesis students and engages in staff-student Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in EDI.
