Dr. Laura Tate is a Lecturer in the School of Resource & Environmental Management at Simon Fraser University (SFU) since January 2023. She teaches courses on planning, planning methods, and building sustainable communities. Previously, she was a sessional instructor at the University of Victoria and a Visiting Lecturer at Eastern Washington University and California Polytechnic State University. Her research focuses on advancing equitable planning practices through qualitative methodologies and challenging conventional evidence hierarchies. She authored Post-rational Planning: A Solutions-Oriented Call to Justice (2021) and co-edited Planning for AuthentiCITIES (2018) and Actor Networks of Planning (2016).
Education: BA in East Asian Studies (McGill University), MA and PhD in Community and Regional Planning (University of British Columbia). Professional experience includes roles as Manager of Growth Strategies, Director of Aboriginal Healthy Living, and Provincial Director of the Community Action Initiative with Metro Vancouver municipalities and BC government agencies. Active in the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP), she serves on its governing board (2024–2026).
She co-developed a green subdivision in suburban Victoria emphasizing tree preservation and habitat conservation. Currently participates in the Xwe’etay/Lasqueti Archaeology Project’s Layered Histories initiative, documenting island histories through archival and community engagement.
