Professor Laura Swift is a Professor of Greek at the University of Oxford, affiliated with Magdalen College as a Fellow and Tutor. She holds academic staff status within the Faculty of Classics. Her education includes MA, MSt, and DPhil degrees from Oxford, followed by roles at Trinity College, New College, and the Open University. She is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow and has collaborated with Potential Difference Theatre on projects exploring fragmented Greek tragedies.
Her research focuses on Greek tragedy, lyric poetry, and the role of the chorus in Athenian society. Recent work examines creative fragmentation in contemporary theatre and the intersection of tragedy with choral music. She co-authored a commentary on Euripides’ Bacchae and has published widely on Greek literature, including textbooks and edited volumes on lyric poetry and moral strategies in early Greek texts.
Teaching spans undergraduate and graduate levels in Classical Literature, with a focus on Archaic and Classical Greek poetry. Her publications include books such as Archilochus: The Poems (2019) and Greek Theatre and Imperial Image (2017). She leads research initiatives on ancient Greek cultural practices and collaborates across disciplines to bridge classical studies with modern performance art.
