Laura Pearle Stewart (January 12, 1976) was a foundational figure in the development of drama and speech programs at Coe College. She joined the faculty in 1902 as an instructor in speech and dramatics, eventually becoming the first professor of speech and department head in 1914. Her role extended beyond teaching, encompassing carpentry, seamstress work, electrical management, and financial oversight for theatrical productions.
She pioneered the drama department at Coe, organizing performances in makeshift venues like Old Main’s third-floor assembly room and later the women’s gymnasium. Under her leadership, the department grew to include seven instructors. Notable contributions included student-written operettas at the Majestic Theater and fundraising efforts for the Red Cross through theatrical productions.
Miss Stewart declined a Hollywood movie director offer to remain at Coe, where she founded the Dramatic Club, Coe Players, and a student group known as 'gypsy storytellers' who entertained children in hospitals and libraries. Her legacy solidified her status as Coe’s 'first lady of drama.'
