Dr. Laura Janes is an Hourly Paid Lecturer at London South Bank University, where she has been teaching since 2007. She contributes to courses in Human Rights and Development and has previously taught Criminal Law. She holds a Professional Doctorate in Youth Justice from the University of Bedfordshire and an MRes in Law, Culture and Identity.

Her research and professional work center on human rights, youth justice, prison law, and access to justice, with a particular focus on children, young adults, and vulnerable individuals in detention. She combines legal practice with policy development and systemic reform.
Her recent publications analyze youth sentencing, child detention in England and Wales, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on rights in custodial settings. These works reflect a consistent thematic focus on legal protections, penal reform, and the application of international human rights standards in domestic contexts.
Dr. Janes has received multiple awards for her contributions to legal aid and human rights:

She founded Young Legal Aid Lawyers in 2005, fostering mentorship and support for early-career legal aid lawyers. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to justice, equality, and quality education.
Dr. Janes is actively engaged in multiple professional associations, including the Association of Prison Lawyers, the Mental Health Lawyers’ Association, and the Criminal Appeal Lawyers’ Association.
