Laura Hemmings is a Lecturer at the University of Cumbria, joining in November 2021. She transitioned from a 13-year clinical career as a CT/MRI imaging specialist and clinical lead, leveraging her expertise to teach radiological practice modules. Her academic qualifications include a Postgraduate Certificate (PgC) in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (TLHE) and a PgC in Computed Tomography. She is currently pursuing a Master's in Educational Professional Practice (Higher Education), focusing on research in medical education.
Her teaching emphasizes modality-specific pathways in radiography, enabling students to specialize while understanding broader patient care contexts. The university’s radiography program stands out for its extended clinical placements (3 years) and cohesive support systems between campus and clinical sites. An annual ‘away day’ in Ambleside reinforces student engagement and preparation for final-year modules.
Key achievements include integrating clinical experience with pedagogical innovation, fostering student confidence through consistent mentorship, and maintaining a collaborative campus environment. Her research interests align with advancing educational practices in healthcare training.
Laura enjoys the supportive academic community at the University of Cumbria, highlighting colleagues and students as central to her experience. Beyond academia, she enjoys adventurous pursuits like scuba diving (qualified in Brazil) and has traveled extensively across South America, Southeast Asia, and Australia.
