Laura Hawthorne is the Interim Assistant Dean and Lecturer at the University of Virginia’s College of Arts and Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Religious Ethics (UVA, 2015), an M.Div. (University of Chicago, 2008), and a B.A. in Religious Studies (University of Chicago, 2003). Her research focuses on comparative religious ethics, war and peace studies, human rights, and migration ethics, with a particular emphasis on Christian and Islamic traditions. She has published widely on topics like refugee ethics, interfaith dialogue, and the ethics of migration policies.
Notable awards include the Louisville Institute Dissertation Fellowship (2014-15) and the UVA Society of Fellows Junior Fellowship. Her teaching portfolio includes courses on human rights, business ethics, and religious ethics. She has co-organized interdisciplinary conferences on religion and international law, and serves as an associate fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture and the Institute for Practical Ethics and Public Life.
Hawthorne’s academic service includes co-chairing the American Academy of Religion’s 'Interreligious Reflections on Immigration' seminar and participating in Mellon-funded teaching initiatives. Her recent publications explore migration ethics through religious frameworks and pedagogical innovations in ethics education.
