Dr Laura Harris is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Southampton, currently serving as an Anniversary Fellow in experimental filmmaking and the cultural sociology of place. She holds roles as Book Reviews Editor for Cultural Sociology and Convenor of the BSA Sociology of the Arts study group. Her research bridges sociology and contemporary art, focusing on visual methods, atmospheres, and the cultural sociology of climate change. She completed her PhD in 2020 through a collaboration with Bluecoat Liverpool’s contemporary arts center.
Her current projects include exploring living museums’ spatial practices and co-producing a nonfiction film with artists to investigate interdisciplinary approaches to place-based research. She has held prior fellowships at the University of Edinburgh and The Sociological Review, where she initiated the Image-Maker in Residence programme. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and she co-curated the Screening the Social film festival.
Her awards include the Anniversary Fellowship, ESRC Postdoctoral Fellowship, and Digital Engagement Fellowship. She supervises PhD student David Frederick Birks in Fine Art and maintains external roles such as journal reviewing.
