Laura Grenfell is an Associate Professor at the Adelaide Law School within the Faculty of Arts, Business, Law and Economics at the University of Adelaide. She holds a prominent position in human rights research and legal scholarship, with a focus on practical applications of human rights principles in Australian and international contexts.
Her research expertise spans three interconnected domains: political rights review examining parliamentary committees that scrutinize bills for human rights compliance across Australian jurisdictions; governance and human rights protection in post-conflict environments including Timor-Leste, South Africa, and Afghanistan; and anti-discrimination laws across Australia, North America, and Europe with particular attention to discrimination faced by the trans community. Her interdisciplinary approach draws from anthropology, politics, development studies, and gender studies to provide comprehensive critiques of legal frameworks.
Professor Grenfell's publication record demonstrates consistent engagement with evolving human rights challenges, with recent work addressing pandemic oversight, aged care reform, work-integrated learning access, and detention practices. Her scholarship shows a clear trajectory toward addressing contemporary human rights implementation challenges through both theoretical analysis and practical policy recommendations.
Her research activities include:
- Analysis of parliamentary rights-scrutiny mechanisms across Australian jurisdictions
- Examination of human rights protection in post-conflict governance structures
- Investigation of anti-discrimination frameworks with focus on trans community experiences
- Development of human rights-based approaches to aged care regulation
- Assessment of OPCAT implementation readiness in Australia
Professor Grenfell actively contributes to policy development through submissions to government departments and engagement with legal practice communities. Her work bridges academic scholarship with practical legal reform efforts, particularly in areas where human rights principles intersect with everyday governance and service delivery.
