Laura E. Sapelly is an Assistant Teaching Professor at Pennsylvania State University, affiliated with the departments of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and History. Her work bridges art, activism, and academia, focusing on the role of women in social movements through craft practices like quilting and sewing. She holds a Ph.D. from Penn State, an M.F.A. from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, an ALM from Harvard University, and a B.F.A. from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
Her research examines how women’s labor, particularly through handicrafts like quilting, contributed to historical and contemporary movements. Currently, she is writing a book merging quilting with STEM education. Sapelly’s artistic practice explores sociopolitical themes, with exhibitions at institutions including the Boston Center for the Arts and the Belger Arts Center. Her artwork is featured in public collections such as the New Bedford Free Public Library.
Her publications include analyses of craft as protest, such as the role of sewing circles in the American Revolution and feminist pedagogy through textile-based activism. While no specific grants or advising roles are detailed, her interdisciplinary work connects historical analysis with contemporary art and educational innovation.
