Lars O. Hedin is the George M. Moffett Professor of Biology at Princeton University, where he serves as Chair of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. He is also affiliated with the High Meadows Environmental Institute and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. His research spans ecosystem-scale nutrient cycling, evolutionary ecology, and microbial methane dynamics.
- PhD in Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Studies, Yale University (1989)
- MS in Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Studies, Yale University (1986)
- BS in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Cornell University (1983)
Research focuses on geographically broad patterns in biogeochemical cycles, particularly nutrient controls in temperate/tropical forests, emergence of ecosystem properties from Darwinian selection, and methane cycling thermodynamics. His lab develops models to explain microbial and plant functional properties at global scales. Fieldwork includes remote forests in Chile/Argentina and tropical systems across Hawaii, Amazon, Panama, and Africa.
Teaching roles at Princeton (1990-present) include courses on global change, environmental systems, and nutrient cycle modeling. Previously taught at Cornell University and Michigan State University.
Hedin's lab has mentored numerous PhD students and postdoctoral fellows, many of whom now hold academic or research positions globally. His work combines empirical studies with theoretical frameworks to address human impacts on biogeochemical systems.
