Larry Diamond is a Mosbacher Senior Fellow in Global Democracy at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI) and a Hoover Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, both at Stanford University. He holds courtesy professorships in Political Science and Sociology. His roles include chairing the Hoover Institution Project on Taiwan in the Indo-Pacific Region and leading the Global Digital Policy Incubator. He previously directed FSI’s Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law.
Education: B.A. (1974), M.A. (1978), and Ph.D. (1980) in Sociology from Stanford University. Taught at Vanderbilt University (1980–85).
Research focuses on global democratic trends, U.S. foreign policy, and comparative governance. Notable works include Ill Winds: Saving Democracy (2020), Squandered Victory (2005), and co-editing the Journal of Democracy. He teaches courses on democracy and American foreign policy, including a MOOC on Comparative Democratic Development.
Scientific Awards: Teacher of the Year (2007), Kenneth M. Cuthbertson Award (2016), and Dinkelspiel Award (2007). Served on advisory boards for USAID, World Bank, and UN.
Labs/Teams: Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law; Global Digital Policy Incubator. Active in policy consultancies, including the China’s Influence and American Interests report (2019).
