Kharis Templeman is a Hoover Institution Research Fellow and Lecturer at Stanford University's Center for East Asian Studies. He manages the Project on Taiwan in the Indo-Pacific Region and previously served as program manager of the Taiwan Democracy and Security Project at Stanford's Freeman Spogli Institute. His research focuses on Taiwan's political development, Chinese influence, and Indo-Pacific geopolitics.
Templeman holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Michigan and a B.A. from the University of Rochester. He is affiliated with the U.S.-Taiwan Next Generation Working Group and coordinates the Conference Group on Taiwan Studies (CGOTS). His work includes contributions to the Varieties of Democracy project and analysis of Taiwan's democratic trajectory since the 1980s.
Key research themes include authoritarianism vs. democracy in Asia, electoral systems, and U.S.-Taiwan strategic cooperation. His 2019 National Asia Research Program Fellowship reflects recognition of his expertise in Asia-Pacific security dynamics.
Templeman has advised on policy initiatives linking semiconductors to US-Taiwan relations and emphasized distinguishing Taiwan's geopolitical situation from Ukraine. His writings address cross-strait tensions, democratic resilience, and the evolving role of Taiwan in global governance.
