Lara El Mekaui is a Lecturer at the University of Waterloo, teaching English and Communications courses. She holds a PhD in English Literature from the University of Waterloo, specializing in Transnational and Diaspora Theory, and has additional degrees: an MA from the American University of Beirut and a BA from Notre Dame University-Louaize.

Her research and teaching areas focus on Palestinian Studies, Migration and Diaspora Theory, Black Studies, Anti-Racist Activism, Critical Race Theory, and Postcolonial Literature. Her work explores themes of hesitancy, belonging, cosmopolitanism, and transnational identities through literary analysis and documentary studies.
Her publications reflect these interests, particularly in analyzing Black and Palestinian diasporic narratives, transnational fiction, and interactive documentary. She is expanding her doctoral research into new ventures while continuing editorial work as the lead non-fiction editor at The New Quarterly.
Her recent and forthcoming articles span topics like generational trauma in diaspora literature, cosmopolitanism in Rabih Alameddine’s works, artistic expression in African diasporic heritage, and comparative Indigenous realities in North America and Palestine. She has contributed to journals such as World Literature Today, Event Magazine, Beirut Today, and Canadian Theater Review.
