Lara Blanchard is the Luce Professor of East Asian Art at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Her research focuses on gender dynamics in Chinese art, particularly exploring women’s subjectivity and representation in historical and contemporary contexts. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan (2001) and has published extensively, including Song Dynasty Figures of Longing and Desire (2018) and the co-authored textbook Asian Art (2015). Current research examines conceptions of women’s authorship in a 19th-century history of Chinese painters.
Her work bridges art history, gender studies, and cultural analysis, addressing themes of authenticity, voyeurism, and gendered spaces. Recent projects include a lecture on Cui Xiuwen’s Ladies’ Room, analyzing gendered gazes in contemporary Chinese art.
