Dr. Lanyan Chen is a Professor at Nipissing University cross-appointed between the Faculty of Arts and Science (Department of Psychology, Sociology, Child and Family Studies and Social Welfare - Social Welfare and Social Development) and the School of Business. She applies feminist political economy perspectives to gender inequality, human rights, and social development.
Educational background includes BA from Inner Mongolian University, MA from Simon Fraser University, and PhD from University of British Columbia. Research examines gender analysis, human rights, health/social welfare policy, and decolonization approaches. She teaches courses in social welfare, social policy, healthcare policy, and social justice.
Current research includes SSHRC-funded projects on regional development forums and sex trafficking in Northern Ontario, plus international collaborations on cooperative development with South Sudanese refugees in Uganda and Tibetan women in China. Publications consistently address gender dimensions of policy implementation across diverse cultural contexts.

Professional experience includes UN appointments as Gender Advisor for Northeast Asia (UNIFEM, 1998-2003) and gender expert roles evaluating human rights programs internationally.
