Dr. Carly Dokis is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Nipissing University's Faculty of Arts and Science. She holds a PhD from the University of Alberta (2010), with prior degrees from Gonzaga University (BA) and the University of Chicago (MA). Her research focuses on environmental governance in northern Indigenous communities, emphasizing decolonizing methodologies and participatory processes.
Key research areas include political ecology, Indigenous-state relations, water governance, and extractive industries. Her work explores how technocratic environmental management interacts with Indigenous knowledge systems, particularly in contexts like the Mackenzie Gas Project and Anishinaabe water quality concerns. She has led or collaborated on major grants including SSHRC Insight Grants and CIHR Training Grants.
Publications span over a decade, addressing themes like environmental impact assessments, treaty rights, and resource development. Her 2015 book Where the Rivers Meet was recognized as a top research partnership in Ontario (2017). Awards include the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (2017).
