Dr. Janna Promislow is an Associate Professor at the University of Victoria Faculty of Law, teaching in JD and JID/JD programs. Her research focuses on Indigenous legal systems, transsystemic administrative law, treaty relationships, and colonial legal history. She leads SSHRC-funded research on modern treaty implementation and contributed to administrative law textbooks.
- Education: BA (Honours) from University of Alberta (1993), LLB from UVic (1998), LLM and PhD from Osgoode Hall Law School (2004-2013)
- Previous Roles: Associate Professor at Thompson Rivers University Law, Visiting Scholar at Victoria University of Wellington (2019), Executive Director of the Centre for Constitutional Studies (University of Alberta), and legal practitioner in the Northwest Territories
Her research explores intersocietal law in fur trade contexts, constitutional rights, and Indigenous-state legal frameworks. Current projects include the National Centre for Indigenous Laws, set to open in 2025. She previously advised Ontario government on Indigenous community consultations and worked on land claims and residential school litigation.
Teaching and supervision areas include administrative law, constitutional law, and Indigenous legal traditions. Collaborates internationally with Indigenous communities and organizations like the Land Claims Agreement Coalition.
