Aimee Craft is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Common Law, University of Ottawa, and an Anishinaabe-Métis lawyer from Treaty 1 territory in Manitoba. She holds a University Research Chair on Indigenous governance and water relationships. Her work focuses on Indigenous laws, treaties, and decolonizing water governance, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches and collaborations with Indigenous nations.
Previously, she served as Director of Research at the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. She is a leading advocate for Indigenous legal frameworks, including treaty interpretation from Anishinaabe perspectives and Indigenous sovereignty over water (nibi). Her research integrates visual arts, film, and international collaborations on transformative memory and Indigenous birthing practices.
Professor Craft teaches courses such as Indigenous Legal Mechanisms and Peuples autochtones et le droit. Her awards include the Canadian Bar Association President’s Award (2021) and the University of Ottawa’s Early Career Researcher of the Year (2021). She co-leads major grants like Decolonizing Water Governance and actively participates in initiatives like the Nibi Declaration and Wa Ni Ska Tan.
