Laith Aqel is a Visiting Clinical Lecturer in Law and Associate Research Scholar in Law at Yale Law School, affiliated with the Orville H. Schell, Jr. Center for International Human Rights. He holds a J.D. from Yale Law School (2021) and a B.A. from New York University Abu Dhabi (2014).
His research focuses on challenging government abuses under national security pretexts, weaponization of anti-terrorism laws, and suppression of activists. Domestically, he has litigated against racist immigration policies and military detention. Internationally, he works with indigenous communities on displacement, transnational corporate war crimes, and human rights violations.
As a Bernstein Fellow, he supported indigenous rights advocacy. His roles at Yale include editing the Yale Journal of International Law, directing the Lowenstein Clinic, and leading initiatives on global legal challenges and Middle Eastern legal advocacy.
He holds fellowships including the Robert M. Cover-Allard K. Lowenstein Fellowship and the Yale Fox International Fellowship at Boğaziçi University.
