Dr. Lachezar Yanev is an Associate Professor of International Criminal Law at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam’s Department of Criminal Law and Criminology, and Co-Director of the “Law in Society” bachelor’s programme. He holds a Ph.D. (cum laude) from Tilburg University (2016) and a LL.M. (cum laude) from Utrecht University (2010). His research focuses on international criminal law, human rights law, and jurisdictional law, with a particular emphasis on co-perpetration liability and universal jurisdiction. He has authored a monograph and co-edited a seminal work in the field.
He is an Editorial Board member of the Leiden Journal of International Law and Tekst en Commentaar: Internationaal Strafrecht, and a member of the Amsterdam Young Academy. His career includes roles at the Special Court for Sierra Leone and clerkships at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the ICC. Awards include the 2021 KNAW Early Career Award and the 2023 VU Teacher of the Year Award.
His research outputs address topics like state immunity for atrocity crimes, Dutch jurisdiction in the Gaza Conflict, and sentencing practices in international criminal trials. He has secured grants including the NWO Open Competition and VICES funding for universal jurisdiction studies. Teaching responsibilities include courses on international criminal courts and tribunals. He actively engages in academic activities, including lectures and editorial work.
