Kyle Shen is an Assistant Professor of Law at the Cleveland State University School of Law. His research focuses on constitutional law through historical and comparative lenses, emphasizing the role of international organizations in national constitutional drafting, particularly in post-authoritarian and transitional contexts. He explores how international involvement in domestic reforms triggers political backlashes and challenges democratic aspirations.

Shen’s research interests include constitutional politics, indigenous nations’ self-determination under constrained sovereignty, and the tension between inclusive constitutional promises and exclusionary identity narratives in preambles. His work appears in the Handbook of Law and Political Systems and the Annual Review of Law and Social Science.
Prior to his academic career, he interned at the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals and the UN Khmer Rouge Trials prosecutor’s office, focusing on appellate law and international criminal law. He taught constitutional law and comparative politics at Occidental College and UT-Austin.
