Mei Shen is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with affiliations in the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, Bioengineering, and the Center for Biophysics and Quantitative Biology. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin under Prof. Allen J. Bard and completed postdoctoral research at the University of Pittsburgh under Prof. Shigeru Amemiya. Her research focuses on nanoelectrochemistry, bioanalytical chemistry, and neurotransmission, particularly at single synaptic clefts and the gut-brain axis.
- Education: Ph.D., University of Texas at Austin (2011); Postdoc, University of Pittsburgh (2012)
Research Interests: Shen’s work integrates nanoscale electrochemical probes with neurobiological systems to study neurotransmitter release and uptake, with applications in neurological disorders. Her lab develops novel sensors for non-redox active neurotransmitters (e.g., acetylcholine) and employs scanning electrochemical microscopy for high-resolution imaging of biological processes.
Awards: 2023 Sloan Research Fellowship, 2021 ACS Arthur F. Findeis Award, NSF CAREER Award (2019), and Scialog Fellow (2020-2021).
Advising & Grants: Shen mentors numerous graduate and undergraduate students, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration. Her grants include NIH and NSF funding for projects on neurochemical detection and gut-brain axis mechanisms.
Labs: Shen Lab (UIUC) focuses on electrochemical innovations for neuroscience, with a team of researchers passionate about unraveling brain communication and diseases through advanced analytical techniques.
