Dr. Kyle Kirkup is an Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law (Common Law Section), specializing in constitutional law, criminal law, and family law as they intersect with gender identity and sexuality regulation. He holds a Doctorate in Juridical Sciences (SJD) from the University of Toronto (2017), an LL.M. from Yale Law School (2012), a J.D. from the University of Ottawa (2009), and a B.Hum. from Carleton University (2006).

His research examines how legal systems shape LGBTQ+ rights and norms, with a current book project Law and Order Queers: Respectability, Victimhood, and the Carceral State under contract with UBC Press. He has appeared before parliamentary committees as an expert witness on issues like HIV non-disclosure, sex work, and federal prison human rights.
Kyle is a frequent media commentator, contributing editorials to The Globe and Mail, National Post, and TVO, and has provided expert reports for the Office of the Correctional Investigator and Ontario Human Rights Commission. He clerked for Justice Louise Charron at the Supreme Court of Canada (2010-2011) and worked at McCarthy Tétrault LLP.
