Kyle J. Lampe is an Associate Professor in Chemical Engineering at the University of Virginia, with courtesy appointments in Biomedical Engineering and Neuroscience. He holds a B.S. from Missouri University of Science and Technology (2004), Ph.D. from University of Colorado Boulder (2009), and completed postdoctoral training at Stanford University.
His research focuses on biomaterials for neural applications including:
- Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine for CNS repair
- Drug delivery systems for neurological disorders
- Design of synthetic polymers and engineered proteins
- Self-assembling peptide hydrogels
- Advanced biomaterial manufacturing techniques
His publications demonstrate consistent focus on neural tissue engineering, particularly hydrogel systems for oligodendrocyte and neural progenitor cell applications. Recent work emphasizes traumatic brain injury models and stimuli-responsive biomaterials.
Honors include:
- Distinguished Young Alumni Award (2020)
- NIH Trailblazer Award (2019)
- ASEE 20 under 40 recognition (2018)
He directs the Lampe Biomaterials Group and collaborates through multiple research centers including the Center for Brain Immunology and Glia. Current grants support work on peptide hydrogels for stroke therapy and neural tissue models.
