Kyla Wazana Tompkins is a Professor of English at Pomona College, specializing in 19th-century U.S. literature and its intersections with food, race, gender, and queer theory. She has been affiliated with Pomona College since 2004 and is currently on leave for the 2025-2026 academic year.
Her research explores the visceral connections between food, embodiment, and cultural politics, particularly in 19th-century American contexts. She has contributed significantly to food studies, queer theory, and American studies through her publications and editorial work.
Her most recent articles analyze themes such as Louisa May Alcott’s culinary metaphors, postcolonial domesticity, and racialized food consumption in antebellum literature. These works span interdisciplinary subfields including feminist theory, critical race studies, and cultural analysis.
Scientific awards and honors include the Lora Romero First Book Prize (2013), Best Book in Food Studies Award (2013), and grants from the Mellon Foundation and National Endowment for the Humanities.
