Dr. Kandice Chuh is a Professor at The Graduate Center, CUNY, affiliated with multiple departments including English, Psychology, Black, Race, and Ethnic Studies, Liberal Studies, Africana Studies, and American Studies. She joined the institution in 2010 and has held administrative roles in American studies, English, and the Center for Place, Culture, and Politics. Her research focuses on 20th century U.S. literatures, critical race studies, queer theory, and decolonial studies, with a particular interest in reimagining the humanities through 'illiberal humanism.'
Education: Ph.D. in English from the University of Washington (1996) and B.A. in English and Women’s Studies from Colgate University (1989). She previously taught at the University of Maryland, College Park (1996–2010), where she was recognized for teaching and mentoring excellence.
Research interests emphasize the intersection of intellectual work with political spheres, disciplinarity, globalization, and global feminisms. Her notable publications include The Difference Aesthetics Makes (2019), which won the 2021 AAAS Book Award, and Imagine Otherwise (2003), honored with the ASA Lora Romero Award. She is also co-editor of Orientations: Mapping Studies in the Asian Diaspora (2001).
Awards include leadership roles such as President of the American Studies Association (2017–2018) and governance positions in the Association for Asian American Studies. Recent courses explore race, transpacific contexts, and decolonization. Dr. Chuh advocates for transformative pedagogy and critical scholarship, integrating aesthetics and social justice.
