Kweku Ampiah is a Professor of Asia and Africa Studies at the University of Leeds, affiliated with the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies. He holds a DPhil in Politics from the University of Oxford and an undergraduate degree from the International Christian University in Japan.
His research focuses on Japanese politics, diplomacy, and development assistance, particularly in the context of Japan-Africa relations and the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD). He investigates the role of Japanese economic ministries like MITI and the private sector in 1960s Ghana-Japan economic cooperation, emphasizing how Japan’s ODA principles evolved. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary global development dynamics.
Ampiah teaches undergraduate modules on Modern Japanese History, Japanese Development Assistance, and Japanese Diplomacy, as well as an MA course on China and the Developing World. He supervises postgraduate research students in these areas. His research affiliations include Asia Pacific Studies and East Asian Studies at Leeds.
