Karol Żakowski is an Associate Professor at the Department of Asian Studies, Faculty of International and Political Studies, University of Łódź, specializing in Japanese politics and foreign policy. He holds visiting scholar appointments at Kwansei Gakuin University, Keio University (Japan Foundation Fellowship recipient), and the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Tokyo. His research focuses on East Asian international relations, Japanese domestic politics, and historical memory issues.
Key areas of expertise include Japanese foreign policy decision-making processes, China-Japan relations dynamics, and the impact of historical disputes on regional diplomacy. He has published extensively in journals like Asian Journal of Political Science and co-authored major works such as Japan’s Foreign Policy Making (Springer 2018). His work analyzes how domestic political structures influence Japan’s engagement with global and regional challenges, particularly regarding territorial disputes, security alliances, and economic cooperation.
Żakowski’s research demonstrates a strong focus on neoclassical realist frameworks, examining how domestic actors (political parties, bureaucratic agencies, interest groups) interact within Japan’s institutional context to shape foreign policy outcomes. Recent studies explore the Abe administrations’ strategies toward China, North Korea, and the evolving U.S.-Japan alliance dynamics in response to Trump’s presidency.
