Mary M. McCarthy is a Professor of Political Science at Drake University, affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences and the Department of Political Science. Her office is located in Meredith 211. She holds a B.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science from Columbia University.
Her research focuses on Japan's domestic and foreign policies, including historical legacies of the Asia-Pacific War impacting Japan-U.S., Japan-China, and Japan-Korea relations. She publishes on Japanese media and regional geopolitical dynamics in the East China Sea. Dr. McCarthy teaches courses on East Asian politics, comparative politics, and Japanese-Chinese international relations.
Awarded the Mansfield Foundation U.S.-Japan Network for the Future Scholar distinction, she actively mentors students pursuing post-graduate opportunities in Asia, particularly the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program. She advises students on career pathways combining international relations with practical experiences in East Asia.
Recent institutional involvement includes Drake University's grant-funded water quality laboratory expansion and collaborations with Homeward Iowa to address family housing insecurity.
