معرفی
Dr. Kristine Cowley is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physiology & Pathophysiology at the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba. She serves as the Director of the Spinal Cord Research Centre (SCRC) and holds a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair focused on improving health outcomes for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). Her research bridges fundamental neuroscience and clinical applications to address secondary complications of SCI.
- Education: PhD in Physiology and Neurosciences (University of Manitoba, 1998); BSc in Biology (University of Winnipeg, 1990).
Research Interests: Dr. Cowley investigates spinal neural mechanisms underlying locomotion, balance, and autonomic support for movement after SCI. Her work emphasizes activity-based therapies to mitigate muscle and bone deterioration, enhance functional capacity, and reduce sedentary-related health risks (e.g., osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease). She employs in vitro/in vivo electrophysiology, neuropharmacology, and human kinematic/physiological assessments.
Scientific Awards:
- Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (2020–2025)
- Canada’s Top 100 Women in STEM (2025)
- Kent Bassett Spiers Award (2023)
- Top Poster Presentation Award (2014)
- Rick Hansen Difference Maker Award (2014)
Advising and Grants: Dr. Cowley mentors graduate students and collaborates with institutions like the Pan Am Research Clinic and Health Sciences Centre. She has secured grants from the Craig H Neilsen Foundation (2021) and the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (2021-2022), among others.
