Dr. Kristine Beaulieu is an Associate Professor in Appetite & Obesity at the School of Psychology, University of Leeds, within the Faculty of Medicine and Health. She is a member of the Appetite Control and Energy Balance Research (ACEB) group and serves as a Study Abroad Tutor. Her work bridges psychology, nutrition, and exercise science to understand appetite regulation and obesity.
Education:
- BSc in Nutrition with Dietetic Internship – University of Moncton, Canada
- MSc in Kinesiology (Exercise Physiology & Sport Nutrition) – University of Western Ontario, Canada
- PhD in Psychology (Physical Activity & Appetite Control) – University of Leeds, UK
Her research focuses on how physical activity, diet, and timing of meals and exercise influence appetite control, energy balance, and obesity. Key themes include intermittent vs. continuous energy restriction, exercise timing (chrononutrition), and the biopsychology of food reward. She has led and contributed to major studies such as the DIVA, SWEET, Satiety Map, and RESET projects.
Her recent publications reveal a strong trend toward randomized trials and systematic reviews examining behavioral and physiological responses to dietary and exercise interventions. These works span clinical nutrition, obesity treatment, metabolic health, and psychological aspects of eating. She frequently investigates homeostatic and hedonic appetite, energy compensation, and circadian influences on metabolism.
Scientific Awards and Honors:
- Research Excellence Award, Leeds Doctoral College
- Research Fellowship, European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN)
- MRC Nutrition Travelling Skills Award
- European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) New Investigator in Basic Science Award
Dr. Beaulieu actively mentors students and research interns, supervising postgraduate researchers such as Junyi Guo and Daria Borisova. She has received grant funding from the MRC, EU (SWEET project), and EASO, supporting both her travel fellowship and clinical trials. She also contributes to public understanding through media features in the New York Times and expert commentaries for the American College of Sports Medicine.
She is affiliated with several research networks, including the European Association for the Study of Obesity Physical Activity Working Group (where she leads the energy intake and appetite control theme), and professional bodies such as the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior, British Dietetic Association, and Canadian Obesity Network.
