معرفی
John Blundell is Research Professor and Chair of PsychoBiology at the University of Leeds' School of Psychology (Faculty of Medicine and Health), where he founded the Human Appetite Research Unit (HARU). His part-time role (0.2 FTE) focuses on advancing the 'Leeds Model' of appetite regulation, which links energy expenditure to eating behavior. With over 40 years of research, Blundell investigates obesity, satiety mechanisms, and the biological drivers of hunger.
Education: BSc in Psychology (University of Leeds, 1965; First Class) and PhD in Neuroscience (University of London, 1970).
Research Interests: Blundell's work centers on human appetite control, emphasizing how resting metabolic rate (RMR) and body composition modulate hunger. He explores interactions between physical activity, sedentariness, and energy balance, with applications in anti-obesity interventions and functional food design. His research integrates physiological, behavioral, and socioeconomic dimensions of obesity.
Publication Trends: Recent articles (2012–2022) consistently address energy balance frameworks, RMR's role in appetite, obesity pathways, and metabolic health. Themes include biological drivers of eating behavior, body composition impacts, and critiques of socioeconomic influences on obesity.
Awards:
- Lifetime Achievement Award (UK ASO, 2019)
- Wertheimer Award (World Obesity Federation, 2022)
- Honorary Fellow, Nutrition Society (2021)
- British Nutrition Foundation Prize (2009)
- Gino Bergami Prize (1994)
Grants & Advising: Secured major funding from BBSRC, EU (FP6/FP7), and NIH for projects like DiOGenes, Full4Health, and appetite control studies. Supervised 45+ PhD students; 10 became professors.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Appetite Control and Energy Balance (ACEB) Research Group and founded HARU (1990), advancing multidisciplinary obesity research.
