Dr. Kristien Zenkov is a Professor of Teacher Education and Literacy Education at George Mason University (GMU), serving as the Academic Program Coordinator for Secondary Education (6-12) and Director of the Division of Elementary, Literacy, and Secondary Education. He is also co-director of the "Through Students’ Eyes" project, which involves diverse youth documenting school experiences through photography and writing. Zenkov holds a PhD in Teacher Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and previously taught at Cleveland State University, where he directed the award-winning MUST Program. He has authored over 150 articles, book chapters, and ten books focusing on urban teacher education, social justice, and professional development schools (PDS).
His research interests include literacy education, urban teaching, social justice, visually-based methods, teacher activism, and school-university partnerships. Key grants include $3M+ from private foundations and the US Department of Education for projects like TSE and teacher mentoring initiatives. Zenkov leads the Inquiry Initiative (Association of Teacher Educators) and the National Center for Clinical Practice in Educator Preparation.
Recent publications emphasize clinical teacher preparation, boundary-spanning roles, and critical, project-based experiences. His work bridges theory and practice, advocating for equity in education through partnerships and innovative pedagogies.
