Koh Fujinaga, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). His research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of eukaryotic gene expression regulation, particularly in the context of HIV transcription and its implications for viral latency, cancer, and autoimmune diseases. He completed his postdoctoral studies at UCSF's Graduate Division and has held a faculty position since then.
Dr. Fujinaga’s work integrates virology, molecular biology, and immunology to explore how transcriptional elongation factors like P-TEFb regulate HIV gene expression and cellular processes. His studies have expanded into translational applications, including identifying P-TEFb as a therapeutic target for HIV and cancer, and investigating the roles of host factors such as Cyclin T1 and HEXIM1 in viral replication.
He has secured NIH grants as Principal Investigator for projects on HIV latency analysis, Piwi proteins' antiviral effects, and NELF’s role in HIV replication. His research also addresses transcriptional misregulation in diseases like leukemia, lymphoma, and cardiac hypertrophy. Key findings include discoveries on CYTOR lncRNA’s role in HIV regulation, Siah1/2-mediated P-TEFb degradation in quiescent cells, and mechanisms maintaining viral latency.
Dr. Fujinaga’s publications span over three decades, with recent contributions emphasizing HIV latency reversal, transcriptional control networks, and cellular stress responses. His work bridges basic science and clinical applications, aiming to develop novel antiviral and cancer therapies through molecular-level insights.
