Knut Arild Flatner is an Associate Professor of Jazz Dance at the Academy of Dance, Oslo National Academy of the Arts. He teaches jazz dance, choreography, repertoire, and technical training ("jumps'n turns"). His artistic career spans performance, choreography, and education, with a focus on contemporary jazz dance innovation.
Educated at the Norwegian National Ballet Academy, he further studied jazz dance in Los Angeles, New York, and Stockholm. Since 1997, he has been associated with Oslo Danse Ensemble, transitioning from dancer to choreographer. Co-founder of Subjazz (2001), he has elevated it into a European leader in contemporary jazz development through workshops, masterclasses, and performances.
His research and performance work explores choreographic innovation, cultural fusion, and artistic expression. Recent performances include works like Higher Ground, Spiderman, and collaborative pieces like Comanche. He has received a 3-year grant for young artists and held board roles in arts organizations like NoDa and Proda.
Flatner’s career combines education, performance, and research, positioning him as a key figure in Norwegian jazz dance. His work emphasizes pushing boundaries in both traditional and contemporary dance forms.
