Azuki Umeda is a Lecturer at the College of Performing Arts at Chapman University. A first-generation Asian queer artist born in Tokyo, Japan, and raised in San Jose, CA, she specializes in choreography and jazz dance. Her work bridges artistic practice with educational innovation, informed by her academic background in dance and integrated educational studies.

Umeda’s research interests focus on contemporary choreographic methodologies, jazz dance pedagogy, and intersectional identity in performance art. She explores how queer narratives shape modern dance practices and educational frameworks.
As a practitioner, Umeda has participated in high-profile projects including:
- Dancer for Twenty-One Pilots’ virtual concert
- Choreography for FINNEAS’s music video “Shelter”
- Featured artist in STEEZY’s “3 Choreographers 1 Song”
- Choreographic Fellow at Jacob’s Pillow 2023
She founded AU.THENTICITY DANCE CO. and will debut her first evening-length performance in February 2024.
