Klaus S. Lackner is a Research Professor at the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment, Arizona State University (ASU), and the founding director of the Center for Negative Carbon Emissions. He is also a Senior Global Futures Scientist at Global Futures Scientists and Scholars.
- Education: Ph.D. in Theoretical Particle Physics from Heidelberg University, Germany (1978); Diplom-Physicist from Heidelberg University (1976).
Lackner’s research focuses on closing the carbon cycle via carbon dioxide capture from the air, carbon sequestration, carbon footprinting, and innovative energy and infrastructure systems. His work explores the scalability of energy systems, the role of automation and robotics in downscaling infrastructure, and energy and environmental policy. Notably, his concept of self-replicating machine systems was recognized by Discover Magazine as one of seven ideas that could change the world.
Scientific Awards:
- Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)
- Contributor to the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
- Clemm-Haas Prize for outstanding Ph.D. thesis at Heidelberg University
Lackner has taught courses such as Honors Directed Study, Research, Thesis, and Special Topics across multiple semesters. His research activities include grants like the Mars Oxygen ISRU Experiment (MOXIE) (2015–2015) and projects with EDF (2015–2017). He leads the Center for Negative Carbon Emissions, which pioneers technologies to address climate change through direct air capture and carbon management.
