Stephanie Arcusa is an Assistant Professor at Arizona State University's School of Complex Adaptive Systems with additional appointments as Assistant Professor at the Center for Negative Carbon Emissions, Affiliated Faculty at Earth Systems Science for the Anthropocene, and Senior Global Futures Scientist at Global Futures Scientists and Scholars.
Her academic background includes a Ph.D. in climate and environmental change from Northern Arizona University, a master's degree in climate science from the University of Bern, Switzerland, and a bachelor's degree in earth sciences from University College Cork, Ireland. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Arizona State University from 2021-2023.
Dr. Arcusa's research spans paleoclimatology and contemporary climate solutions. Initially focusing on reconstructing environmental changes through natural archives, her work has pivoted toward developing practical frameworks for carbon sequestration certification and climate mitigation. Her expertise includes earth system measurement, paleoclimate reconstruction, climate action planning, negative emission technologies, and carbon accounting standards.
Her publication record demonstrates a clear evolution from paleoclimate studies to carbon management solutions, with recent work emphasizing certification frameworks for carbon removal technologies. She has published in high-impact journals including Climate Policy, The Holocene, Geophysical Research Letters, Earth System Science Data, and Science.
- NAU Presidential Fellowship (2016-2020)
- European Union Erasmus Scholarship (2013)
- UMass Amherst William L. Markey Scholarship (2011)
- University of Bern Oeschger Center poster competition 1st place (2014)
- University College Cork Devoy Prize for top-ranking undergraduate project (2014)
Dr. Arcusa leads the Carbon Systems Management Research Group and is actively developing standards for carbon removal accounting. She has organized stakeholder engagement workshops for the Intermountain West Energy Sustainability and Transitions initiative and co-authored chapters on Direct Air Capture deployment. Her teaching includes courses on Big Data in the Global Economy and special topics in climate science.
